As a result of urbanization and the excessive use of street-lighting networks, polarized light pollution have increased to such a degree that most people lost contact with the starry sky.
To address this issue, the International Dark-Sky Association launched its "Starry Sky Park" program that awards this title to places that let people see stars, spot meteors, or ponder constellations without any disturbance caused by artificial lights. Zselic natural Reserve was awarded the title in 2009 as the first spot of the kind in Europe.
